Being a business owner is hard and – it’s not for everyone.

Sure, technology has provided us with the tools to build better, more cost-effective businesses. But, that doesn’t mean everyone should do it, that it’s easy, or you’ll succeed.

And, to confuse matters, we’re living through the greatest era of fake, glorified entrepreneurship on steroids (thanks, social media!).

So, while people are quick to realise they’re not a Steve Jobs or Beyonce, for some reason, they’re able to convince themselves they’re an entrepreneur and can build a million-dollar business – like it’s that easy.

We’ve all been convinced we can (and should) go and start a business. But, just because Zuckerberg put on a hoodie and became a billionaire doesn’t mean everyone else can.

Why You’ll Fail to Succeed

All too often we see proud business owners who’ve struggled through life; trying in earnest to build the next big empire, forging blindly ahead convinced of their success.

And, as Accountants, we’re the ones who see them crumble before the finish line. These business owners who, for the entirety of their business, have mistakenly focused on one thing – ensuring their business survives at all costs.

But, by doing this, you aren’t putting yourself in the best position to succeed. In fact, not only might you be wasting time, but you’re also hurting your financial wealth, reputation, and brand equity (while losing people’s money along the way).

Because, by placing your business at the core of everything, you’re actually significantly stunting your growth.  And, instead of progressing professionally and financially, you will find yourself stretched out thin, with a business that’s not worth what you thought it would be.

Being A Boss Is More Than Chasing Rainbows

Let’s cut the entrepreneurial fluff – It’s not easy, and it’s not for everyone.

How are you investing all your time, energy, and money? Cause with all that grit and hard work centred on your business, how are you securing your success?

How do you even define success? Because, trying to be your industry’s version of Zuckerberg is like chasing rainbows in a time where you could have been an incredible number two, or four in a great company and setting yourself up for a better long-term financial position long-term.

Let’s get back to the basics

Start by asking yourself, “Why am I even going down this path in the first place?”

What’s the big picture?

The answer?

Happiness. Think about it. We are sure we’re not wrong.

So, then – What’s happiness to you?

Is money your answer? Is it earning $150,000 in a job you hate?

Or, is it building something that is truly your own? You might only be making $70,000, but you’re in control of your day, your income, and your happiness.

Is your answer more time? Is it time with your family, time to help out at your local surf club, or the time to build your wine cellar?

Irrespective….

You Can’t Loose Sight of Your Big Picture

We want to help you reframe the conversation. You need to understand that your business forms part of a bigger picture.. your big picture.

You need to reverse engineer your true north and map out your plan to help you get there. And as your Accountants and Advisers, there’s no better way to keep you accountable than through your numbers.

Yeah, it’s going to be hard work because there’s no magic formula or pot of gold waiting for you at the end of that rainbow you’re chasing.

There’s no 9-week process to make you a wealthy entrepreneur; no book written by someone who’s never actually built a business (besides the one that “teaches” you how to build one); no one-answer tax strategy to save you thousands.

That shit’s not real. It takes work. Hard work.

And, those “millions” we hear about in headlines; the entrepreneurs who sell up and retire forever at 30, the Facebook profile images with big watches and Prada handbags… well, they’re not always realistic either. So, don’t get caught up in the fluff.

Learn To Be a Happy and Successful Business Owner

It doesn’t mean you can’t be happy while being a business owner. You just need to understand why you’re doing the things you’re doing, because:

How you make your money is way more important than how much you make – Gary Vee

It means placing yourself, your family, and your happiness at the centre of your business. It means being honest with yourself in understanding what you’re really seeking.

Be practical.

Be self-aware.

Don’t lose sight of your true north, your big picture.

Because, 30, 40, or 60 years from now, your only regret will be you didn’t focus your time and energy on the things that actually make you happy.

You, your family, and your big picture should be at the core of everything you do and every decision you make (both at home and at work).

Everything else (your business, income, super, investments, entities, tax) becomes a tool or vehicle to ensure your success.
